1. Fair play for all: the cultural context of play in the early years

Course Outline:

This course will explore the ways that foundation stage children learn cultural values and practices through their play and how they can recreate these in a safe and challenging environment.

Course Aims:

This course offers the opportunity to:

-explore the cultural values and practices learned through play
-exchange ideas and strategies for making play accessible to all children regardless of their cultural background
-plan creatively for play, drawing on a diverse range of resources

Aspects to be covered:
An identification of the cultural values and practices learned through play, and the ideas, strategies, planning, and range of resources necessary for making play accessible to all children, as preparation for life in a culturally diverse society.

General Approach:
This course will involve a succinct presentation to introduce participants to the theoretical and practical considerations of the topic.  There will be opportunities for focused partner and group discussion to identify a wide range of teaching strategies, and to provide for information sharing, problem solving and the dissemination of good practice.  Each participant will receive a booklet detailing the major points covered in the course.

2. Citizenship in the foundation stage: developing knowledge and understanding of a culturally diverse world

Course Outline:
This course will explore citizenship as it applies to children in the foundation stage to help them learn to give and to receive respect, particularly in terms of the differences and similarities in their learned beliefs and values.

Course Aims:
This course examines the practical strategies and activities needed to help children make sense of the world in which they live.  In particular, we will be looking at the Early Learning Goals that state that children should be developing the skills, knowledge and understanding to:
-Look closely at similarities, differences, patterns and change
-Find out about past and present events in their own lives and in those of their families, and other people they know
-Begin to know about their own cultures and beliefs and those of other people 

Aspects to be covered:
Identification of a good citizen and what we can reasonably expect from foundation stage children in terms of their development of a sense of identity and self-esteem, empathy for others, and a respect for diversity.
