Thanks for these Stuart - they look very useful indeed. By the way, some interesting Refugee Week and other programmes coming up on Teachers' TV: ASYLUM _http://www.teachers.tv/video/20633_ (http://www.teachers.tv/video/20633) 25 minutes Wed 20th Jun 22:30 Thu 21st Jun 23:00 Fri 22nd Jun 03:30 This Academy Award-nominated documentary is a powerful, dramatic tale of a young African woman's tragic entanglement in the choking threads of politics and culture. Baaba Andoh, a young Ghanaian woman, goes in search of her father's blessing to marry a young man. Her joy at finding her father turns into a nightmare as he insists she submit to his choice of marriage to an old man. Her father also tells Baaba that she must undergo female genital mutilation as part of a bloody, life threatening tribal custom which, although illegal, is still practiced in Ghana. Baaba is forced to flee her father's village, seeking refugee status in the USA. Once overseas, however, she becomes embroiled in the US immigration system; asylum in the USA often means spending years in prison. REFUGEES IN SCHOOLS _http://www.teachers.tv/video/3115_ (http://www.teachers.tv/video/3115) 30 minutes Tue 19th Jun 20:30 Wed 20th Jun 00:30 Thu 21st Jun 02:30 Refugees in Schools highlights the problems that face refugee schoolchildren in Britain and how schools in Birmingham have been working with parent partnerships to help children settle in. The programme shows how schools are working with parents to help integrate Somalian children and their families into British society. The schools work with parent partnership co-ordinators, who provide a crucial link between the families and the school. This relationship is explored as we follow the co-ordinator on a home visit and see interviews with parents, giving a fascinating insight into the culture of families. REFUGEES LIKE ME _http://www.teachers.tv/video/20703_ (http://www.teachers.tv/video/20703) 60 minutes Tue 19th Jun 23:00 Thu 21st Jun 05:00 Sun 24th Jun 00:00 This programme provides a voice for six people with six very different stories. These people are from six very different parts of the world, yet all have a familiar tale of refugeeism. Each has endured the betrayal of their own governments to keep them safe and protected in their homelands. Many have risked their lives in escaping tyranny; all have suffered the loss of loved ones. In the end, however, these refugees are all a telling testament to the triumph of the human spirit over repression and justice. ALSO: POLISH INCLUSION _http://www.teachers.tv/video/17833_ (http://www.teachers.tv/video/17833) 30 minutes Tue 26th Jun 12:30 Tue 26th Jun 20:30 Thu 28th Jun 02:30 A look at the different challenges faced with the arrival in Britain of emigre children from the new EU states, such as Poland. Since EU expansion the UK has seen a transformation in the nature of immigration, with Europeans from the newly admitted eastern states becoming the dominant group. Much is made of the negative effects of immigration, but this programme looks at how four schools, who have been facing the challenge of integrating large numbers of newly arrived Polish students across the key stages, are not only managing but see benefits from their arrival. Most of the new students arrive with very little English but all four schools have been successful at including them, whether they have been able to draw on an existing Polish community or not. I would like to produce a more complex version with more information (social/historical/economic) from older or wiser children.I would appreciate any corrections, additions, suggestions so that I can post it in time for the week. Go to http://www.collaborativelearning.org/newsletter.html or details and the link. Also I am working with Lucie Polya of Camden EMAS to run a humanities workshop on the afternoon of 3rd July. Outside Camden schools are very welcome to join us for only £25 each. We try to keep costs well below Capita prices! Stuart ..
