Article: [eal-bilingual] BBC Jam suspension

I hope all EMA managers write to the BBc trust to ask for the
restoration of these materials which no commercial publisher is ever
likely to produce. I intend to get NATE to complain and i hope NALDIC
does too! Stuart

Subj: [eal-bilingual] BBC Jam suspension

As the BBC did not publicise it well, you may not know that BBC Jam,
> which was suspended last Tuesday, has a substantial EAL/bilingual
> element. We have been developing for BBC Jam a number of EAL
activities
> embedded in DandT 11-14 and Science 7-9 (for all the UK) together
with
> Bengali, Somali and Urdu translations - both contextual dictionaries
and
> longer 'key concepts' with images and video. As you probably know,
BBC
> Jam has just been suspended by the BBC Trust (formerly Governors).
> This means that as well as the existing material, which was ready
to
> go on
> line when the service was suspended, further plans to develop EAL
and
> Bengali, Somali and Urdu translations for English, Maths and Science
for
> all age groups have also been frozen. I am told that if we highlight
the
> importance of the site for bilingual pupils there is a good chance
that
> at least that aspect, which the BBC call 'Community Language
Support',
> can be restored. We would also provide curriculum-related
translations
> into other community languages. Of course if the EAL and bilingual
> materials are restored within the general BBC Jam curriculum content
> then that will be of benefit to all pupils.
