Paul That may be an accurate assessment for many children, however, there are children who demonstrate poor mathematical ability, such as children with dyscalculia or children whose previous teaching in Maths was less than inspiring, but who may have extraordinary abilities in other subjects. These children could be misjudged if mathematical ability alone was taken into account. 'research had shown that the best way to ability group newly-arrived EAL students was through their mathematical ability.' Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction in terms of any research that has looked at this?
