Helen

How much time have you got and how good are you at maths?

If you want to calculate the CVA for any pupil you need to know the previous
score (average point score or APS) and the subsequent score in whatever CVA
you want to look at (eg KS1 SATs to KS2 SATS). You also need to know all the
variables which relate to the pupil which are included in the models. These
variables include the following attainment and contextual factors:

Pupil prior attainment
Gender
Special Educational Needs
First language (for given prior attainment)
Measures of pupil mobility
Age
An "In care" indicator
Ethnicity
Free School Meals (for given Ethnicity)
Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index (IDACI)
Average and range of prior attainment within the school (KS2-3, KS2-4 and
KS3-4 only).

In the CVA model, these variables are given a value and fed into a
mathematical formula each year to give an expected KS2 score. The one below
is the model for KS1-KS2 in 2006. I have highlighted the EAL bit but you
will also need all the other bits eg ethnicity etc

17.939 + 0.0107*(KS1 APS squared) + 0.506 *KS1 APS + 0.062*(KS1 reading
points - KS1 APS) + 0.262*(KS1 maths points - KS1 APS)
 + 0.127 (if in care) - 0.961*IDACI score - 1.381 (if School Action) - 2.112
(if Action Plus or Statemented)
 - 0.629 (if joined after Sept Y6) - 0.151 (if joined not in July/Aug/Sept
yr 3-5)
 - 0.246 (if female) - 0.634*(age within year where 1 Sept= 1.00, 31 Aug =
0.00)
+ for EAL pupils only (1.814 + 0.0065*(KS1 APS squared) - 0.2105 *KS1 APS )
+ ethnicity coefficient from table below - Can't include this as the
moderator stopped it
+ for FSM pupils only (- 0.448 + FSM/ethnicity interaction from table below)

Their actual score take away their prediction which you have worked out
through this mathematical fomula is then their CVA, a minus value if it is
less than expected or positive if it is higher than their prediction.

CVA for a cohort of pupils is worked out by taking the average of all these
positive and negative values. One further calculation is added called the
shrinkage factor which is based on the number in the cohort.

As you can see you wouldn't want to make a habit of this

You can do this for 2006 using the DCSF's Ready Reckoner which is here
http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/performance/1316367/CVAinPAT2005/

The first page explains how it all works

The Raise online site
https://www.raiseonline.org/login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2findex.aspx

will show you all this and more for 2006 and 2007 with no maths and the
ability to filter out individuals or groups of pupils by characteristics
just to look at their scores but you will need access codes from your school
to get into the live data about the pupils in your school.

There is an online tutorial for RAISE online once you are into the site.

Well you did ask

Nicola

Hi

Can anyone help with calculations of CVA for EAL pupils? I saw something a
few days ago on the web - didn't bookmark the page, and now can't find it
again!

Is there a formula that I can use. I'm confused!!

Thanks in advance

Helen
