Article: [eal-bilingual] Open Learn website - refugees

I agree. It really is worth a good look. It promises a course of real depth,
that attends not so much to what compels refugees to flee or where they are
from, but turns the focus on 'us', to the complex issues that shape our
country's attitudes and reception of refugees...why the debate is so charged and
what indeed is at stake. The section on how the law of refugee status
discriminates against women is an example of this, as is the effects of the asylum
process on refugees' mental health. Some very useful information in the pages
on display too, eg. the immigration/asylum legislation developments since
1905.....and a very poignant and (retrospectively) shocking picture of the
deportation of Czech Jews from Croydon airport in 1939......

Thanks Frank for bringing this to our attention.

Dear all,

my institution (the Open University) has set up an open access site
containing freely accessible materials from some of our courses, which
can be accessed via www.openlearn.open.ac.uk .

A recent addition thatI thought people might find of interest is on 'Who
counts as a refugee':

http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=3490

Best wishes,

Frank
