Article: [eal-bilingual] Maths problem solving

Hi Linda

the only activity on my CD (Racing to English) that addresses this issue is
in the numeracy section - it is called "time problems" - it consists of 24
cards like this:

If it's half past 7 now, what time will it be in 4 hours?

      half past 11 (or 11:30)

      1 point

If it's 10 past 4 now, what time will it be in 20 minutes?

      half past 4

      or 4:30

      3 points

Players take it in turn to take a card and ask the next pupil the question
on the card - if they get it right they get the points shown on the card -
first to 25 is the winner.

This is a simple idea that can easily be used to address other types of
problem - if you let me have a few problems I'll develop some materials to
practise them

cheers
Gordon

I wonder if any others are working on how to help EAL pupils in problem
solving in Maths. We would love to share ideas here, so that we are not
all re-inventing the wheel.

Many thanks
