This is obvious for lots of reasons - social and academic. However one reason why it often doesn't happen is because top sets are full, and pupils already placed in those sets can't be moved out to make room for new arrivals. Has anyone found a way round this? The CRE (as was)in it's Race Relations Amendment Act - Guide for Schools booklet p.12 cites a positive school practice scenario entiltled 'Revising Failing Ploicies' & goes on to advocate the practice of 'putting pupils who arrive after the start of the academic year, including those with EAL, automatically in the top set, until their abilities could be assessed.' It goes on to say 'the school's monitoring data revealed that minority ethnic and refugee pupils received better assesments & attainment levels improved noticeably after the policy was changed'. I often cite this to schools. Hope this helps you. Hi Paul I totally agree with you - but I know of no research that has shown this to be true - do you? Such research would be helpful when talking to colleagues cheers Gordon ----- Original Message ----- From: "Butcher Paul" <paul.butcher at peterborough.gov.uk> To: "For practitioners involved in teaching pupils from ethnic andlinguisticminorities" <eal-bilingual at lists.becta.org.uk> Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 4:55 PM Subject: Re: [eal-bilingual] to set or stream EAL students? Joy You are right and the school is wrong. Steaming is generally bad for EAL pupils, setting is better, and mixed ability would be even better Paul Butcher Senior Ethnic Minority Achievement Consultant Learning Children's Services 165a Cromwell Road Peterborough PE1 2EL -----Original Message----- From: eal-bilingual-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:eal-bilingual-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Barrett, Joy - CYP&F - Educational Effectiveness Sent: Thursday, April 24, 2008 4:44 PM To: eal-bilingual at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [eal-bilingual] to set or stream EAL students? Does anyone have any advice on the placement of EAL students, especially new arrivals when the school (secondary) has streaming in place? With setting I always try to negotiate a middle to higher group when it has been difficult to really assess the student's ability in the subject - preferring always to go for the higher sets where the models of 'good' English should be(!). But now one school is going over to streaming - what are colleagues experience here and is there any academic research in this area?
