1. Event - Islington's EMAS are hosting a National Educators’ Conference.

'Beyond induction: Raising the attainment and supporting the integration of all new arrivals' is at Islington's Barnsbury Centre on:
Wednesday 30 April 2008, 9.00am – 3.30pm.

MAIN SPEAKERS AND PRESENTATIONS
 
Beyond Induction: raising attainment through participation. 
MARION ROSEN, Headteacher, Keir Hardie Primary School, Borough of Newham. 
 
Pupil mobility, attainment and progress at KS1-KS4: what research tells us.
DR. STEVE STRAND, Associate Professor, University of Warwick
 
EU migration: key national issues 
CLAUDE MORAES, MEP, previously Director of Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants.
 
Supporting the integration of refugee children and young people. 
SHARED FUTURES, Salusbury World/Comic Relief.
 
The day will also include participatory workshops from experienced practitioners, including:
 
SOFIA ALI, previously the national strategies’ consultant for the New Arrivals Excellence Programme, on an inclusive approach to the induction of pupils new to English at KS3. 
 
BILL BOLLOTEN, education consultant, on supporting the inclusion of new arrivals from new EU member states.
 
ISLINGTON PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS sharing their effective practice on teaching pupils new to English, good assessment practice and engagement with families, cultural diversity as part of the core curriculum, teaching KS4 EAL new arrivals, and involving parents from particular groups in their children’s learning. Some schools will be using film footage to illustrate their practice.
