TEACHING REFUGEE AND ASYLUM SEEKING CHILDREN Wednesday 19 March 2008 09:30 to 15:30 (Registration at 09:15) Course ref: E112 Course Venue Institute of Education 20 Bedford Way London WC1H 0AL Course Aims The course will aim to: • provide background information on refugees and asylum seekers, and asylum issues in the UK • raise awareness of the impact on children of persecution, loss and exile, and ways schools can support resilience • provide guidance on effective practice in promoting the inclusion of refugee pupils in school • provide examples of curriculum activities that develop awareness, and generate empathy and understanding towards refugees Course Outline This course aims to provide an overview of good practice in teaching children from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds. Participants will develop an awareness of the current context of asylum policy and the need to respond to children’s diverse needs.
