I have a lot of personal experience with this kind of case. The test writers are right to say that standardised norms don't fit, in which case a test or any other assessment has to inform professional judgement and not act as a crutch for it, as I fear it sometimes does. I begin with an analysis of the person's work, and of what they do and don't understand, then look for patterns in the errors and think of possible causes. I build up from there, keeping samples of work as a record of progress. It doesn't help with a label, but it does help the students. Best wishes, John Bald |
