I suspect that the new single equality policy will allow an EAL pupil who could achieve in science or maths if they understood the questions, to have the questions and answers translated orally or in writing along the same lines as in the SATs, A pupil who is physically impaired could have an amanuensis etc etc. Apologies for the tortuous sentence but it is Friday. To qualify candidates must have arrived in the UK in the last two years. They must have a dictionary with them in the exam, and the dictionary must be a simple translation dictionary (without explanations). So, if a pupil arrives at the beginning of 4th Year they will qualify for extra time for their GCSEs, but not beyond. We have found that this is usually long enough. Yours truly, Philip Middleton. -----Original Message----- From: eal-bilingual-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:eal-bilingual-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Sharkey, Christine (C&LL) Sent: 18 January 2008 14:47 To: eal-bilingual at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [eal-bilingual] Cantonese pupil Can anyone advise on what concessions would be available to recently arrived child + sitting GCSEs Thanks Chris Sharkey Disclaimer This e-mail (including any attachments) is only for the person or organisation it is addressed to.
