Article: [eal-bilingual] eal-bilingual Digest, Vol 57, Issue 4

Before committing oneself to alternatives to GCSE, it is probably
important to think about the following:

- is the alternative generally recognised? If not, there is no real
reason to take it
- will it require separate teaching? That has implications for
cohesion within the school.
- could the pupil achieve a GCSE with an extra year? In which case,
continuing the GCSE course, but taking the axam the following year
(in the 6th form or in a college) might be advisable for a pupil who
wants to follow an academic path.

It's worth saying that some of the alternative exams which have
parity with GCSE are more grammar-based and therefore suitable only
for pupils who have previously followed an EFL type curriculum.
