Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) Postgraduate Certificate September 2008 - June 2009 This programme is delivered in Canterbury throughout the academic year. Canterbury is close to the M2/A2 in Kent - easily accessible by both road and rail (Victoria, Waterloo East or Charing Cross). Entry requirements You will normally be expected to have QTS and in addition, you should have at least three years' relevant teaching experience and access to EAL learners in classroom contexts, necessary for completing your assignments. You will also have access to IT/internet facilities so that you are able to communicate electronically with tutors and peers, access library resources and word process assignments. Programme details For each module you will be required to attend 5 sessions ( 6 hours each) during term time at the Canterbury campus, 10 am - 4pm. These could be Saturdays or an extended afternoon during the week, for example, 5 Fridays. Term 1: Introduction to TEAL (an overview of key issues) Term 2: Second Language Acquisition and Learning in the Classroom Term 3: The Structure and Teaching of English in Curriculum Contexts For each module you will have a reader of key papers and will be expected to use University resources to support your study. Self study between sessions will contribute to each module assessment (equivalent to 4000 words for each module). Assignments are linked to classroom practice and you will be offered individual and group tutorial support. The University provides both on-line and campus-based study support for students.
