Article: [eal-bilingual] EAL/EMAG student trip

HI
I agree with Sara on this.
An alternative approach and one that we have in Edinburgh been frequently involved in, with lots of success over many years is by facilitating the fuller involvement of EAL pupils in school camps/outdoor ed trips etc. This can mean an EAL teacher accompanies school staff and pupils for the entirety or part of or a school residential trip or takes a group of pupils, bilingual and monolingual who cannot stay away from home overnight but will be given permission from their parents to go for a full day. Either way it involves working closely with school staff and parents to identify the options and then make it happen. It gives pupils the chance to participate with support in the activities that the rest of their peers are doing and can facilitate the start and building of friendships between bilingual and monolingual pupils. It also encourages the school to consider what the barriers are to full participation in such events and hopefully develop approaches to overcome/address them.

Also isn't a key aim of any such visit to build relationships between this group of pupils and staff in the school ? And this cannot be realised if the pupils are taken out by an
