Course - Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of English as an Additional Language The Institute of Education, in partnership with Redbridge Local Authority, is offering this course under the auspices of the Training and Development Agency for Schools. The course is specially designed to meet the professional needs of teachers of bilingual learners in infant, primary or secondary schools. The course will be offered at two sites, the Institute of Education in central London, and Redbridge Teachers’ Centre, and will run part time (four days per term) over one year. The course leads to a qualification: the Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of English as an Additional Language. The course is offered at Masters level. This means that successful graduates from the Certificate may take 60 out of 90 credits forward to Masters’ courses. One course: the MA in Bilingual Learners in Urban Educational Settings has been specifically designed to provide such a route to further study in this field. WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? This course will be of interest to anyone teaching in a mainstream primary or secondary school, has a management role, or is a Minority Ethnic Achievement coordinator in their school. Applicants will have a degree, qualified teacher status (QTS), and at least three years’ teaching experience. WHO TEACHES ON THE COURSE? The course leader is Dr Catherine Wallace, Reader in Education at the Institute of Education. Jannis Abley (Deputy Manager, Ethnic Minority Advisory Team) will lead on the Redbridge strand of the course. They will be supported by a course team consisting of professional teacher trainers with many years’ experience in the field. WHAT DOES THE COURSE CONSIST OF? Three taught modules, one per term. Course - MA course: Bilingual Learners in Urban Educational Settings The MA course, Bilingual Learners in Urban Educational Settings, is designed for teachers and other professionals who work with bilingual children. Participants on the course will develop practical proposals for classroom research, curriculum planning and materials development to support the teaching and learning of bilingual pupils in urban schools. In addition, the course will help participants to provide leadership within their schools and Local Authorities to maximise support for linguistic minority children in London. Course participants will complete two core modules and then chose from a selection of optional modules. They will then do a report or dissertation on a topic of their choice. Vacancy - TEACHER OF EAL - ERNEST BEVIN COLLEGE - London TEACHER OF EAL Salary: Main Scale Location: LONDON SW1 School: ERNEST BEVIN COLLEGE Contract: term Temporary Start date: September 2008 Main Scale (Maternity Cover) – Temporary with possibility to extend into full time contract For September 2008 We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Teacher of EAL to work within our recently established EAL/EMA department. The department has well established partnership teaching and offers a range of support to EAL students. The successful candidate will work with two EAL members of staff, and pupils with a range of languages and backgrounds. Ernest Bevin College is an 11-19 boys school with a mixed sixth form of approximately 250 students based in new buildings, with good transport links.
