leaders, Inclusion Managers, Heads of Year, Citizenship  
Coordinators,  EMAS teachers and teaching assistants, Learning mentors

Description:
This two-day course aims to provide an overview of good practice in  
teaching children from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, as well  
as practical strategies for practitioners. The course will also  
include workshops from Greenwich and Lewisham Young People’s Theatre  
and Woodberry Down Primary School
(Hackney).

The following areas will be covered:

• The diverse experiences of refugee children and young people
• Background to asylum issues in the UK
• Understanding children’s emotional and social needs
• The role of the school as a protective factor
• Promoting integration and community cohesion
• Listening to refugees and developing a culture of participation
• Welcoming new arrivals and managing pupil mobility
• Peer support
• Approaches to teaching and learning about refugees
