OK - navigation box (on the left, when you are in certain areas, e.g. the

OK my view is to lose it completely on repository pages as it is
confusing to non-techy users and as you say too busy. Long lists of
items are just not easy to browse in it but are a little better in
html. That means having explicit navigation on the page via links. You
could have a common simplified pane of some sort I guess.

You could have it on a 'special browse' site page for the cases when
it is useful.
