Article: Ang. Ang. RE: Ang. [oats-sig] Mozilla accessibility activity - Firevox

No source code available for the final WWAAC browser I'm afraid. It is a
Delphi application built around the MS IE component, and it's got links to
Handicom proprietary modules for some of the functionality (though the
basic functionality is independant). We have the source for an earlier
prototype for the browser developed in Java based on an earlier Java
browser component. But that is a bit outdated.
I suppose the most productive thing for such a project would actually not
be to dive into old code, but rather to use the design of the browser as a
spec for a new implementation of an alternative plugin UI skin for
Firefox/Firevox. I'll talk this over with our programmers here (Bengt and
Lars). Possibly the self contained Java UI building tool and the XML based
tailored UI skin files could be re-used without too much hazzle?

About general purpose applications: Yes, Ocra is interesting, but that
will be for users with major visual problems, and on Linux only won't it?

It would be interesting to consider an "Ocra Lite" as an OS, and ideally
cross-platform, basic speech and screen reading support, targetted at a
wider group of people with needs for reading support, and which could then
be used and provided with enhanced functionality within different
applications - like OO.org etc. It would contain tailorable speech support
for keyboard input, option for reading of text copied to the clipboard,
basic screen reading of text under the cursor and focussed UI components,
and hooks for more advanced reading (like in Firevox - with navigation and
reading, highliting of text etc) within selected applications like OO.org
and ABI Word.

Is the source available then Mats?

>One thing to remember though is that however fancy support you provide
for a special task and app - like Firefox/Firevox - most users in need for
this will also need and want that support for other similar tasks on their
systems. >From that point of view it is always a bit questionable to
invest too much energy in developing application and task specific support
in isolation. A user who needs this support when browsing on the Internet
with Firefox will also need it when coping with text in other situations -
that is a more general purpose screen reading and text input
text-to-speech support. So it is a challange to make things come together
- providing extra task and application specific support that can cooperate
with and enhance more general purpose tools.<br>On the other hand, more
and more tasks are handled as web apps via the web browser, so it is very

I quite agree even though the 'web as platform' and Web 2.0 are growing
rapidly. Despite this I believe Aaron at Mozilla is keen to support the
development of more general solutions like Orca.
