Magnification on Linux is the topic of an interesting discussion on the GNOME desktop's accessibility mail list. Developers and users are working out the ideal solution and how to exceed the features currently found on windows (e.g. ZoomText). Magnification is important both for people with low vision and those who want reading support such as word highlighting and speech. Providing this as a service means it can be used seamlessly in conjunction with other assistive technology such as screen readers or switch input. The discussion started out technical with users later adding their requirements and is well timed for this year's GNOME Accessibility Summit at Boston in October. If magnification is important to you please join in and influence how magnification on Linux develops. The discussion can be viewed on: http://www.nabble.com/D-BUS-based-magnification-API-tf4343026.html and a user sub thread at: http://www.nabble.com/FW%3A-D-BUS-based-magnification-API-tf4362469.html You can join the mail list: http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-accessibility-list There's a wiki page for user requirements at: http://live.gnome.org/GAP/Magnification Details of this year's GNOME Accessibility Summit can be found at: http://live.gnome.org/Boston2007/AccessibilitySummit -- Steve Lee -- Open Source Assistive Technology Software Jambu - alternative input www.fullmeasure.co.uk |
