'The Schools Open Source Project will give a bidding company the
opportunity to spend two years building a community of schools to use
and develop open source alternatives to Microsoft software, in the
hope that a level playing field can be encouraged for the future
development of open source solutions, which provide both better value
for money and a wider curriculum of computer-related activities in the
classroom.'

The Open Source community are still recovering from the way Becta
dealt with the bidding process after the contract was given to a n
outfit with no known track record of experience in FOSS and is unknown
to the community. Things have calmed down a bit now but there is a lot
of frustration and a complaint will be made. Schoolforge put in a bid
under the leader ship of the Learning Machine and it's to everyone's
credit that their commitment to encouraging all interested in Open
Source in education is still of prime importance
