I see the need for categories in selecting icons, and that's done by tags and search on straight-street (though it shows bitmapped thumbnails) . However the symbols are not immediately available for direct use either interactively or in other applications as they have to be downloaded and unzipped (as does SVGZ). I'm toying with the idea of a RESTful web API for getting the SVG symbols and possibly collections as you suggest.
