At secondary school level, the generic issues in SEN should be accompanied by consideration of the subject-specific implications. In ASD, for example, teachers' attention might be drawn to the excellent series "Children with autism: Strategies for accessing the curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4" http://www.teachernet.gov.uk/wholeschool/sen/teacherlearningassistant/ASDKS3 4/ where general advice is coupled with knowledge specific to particular subjects. Much of the subject-specific literature of SEN has been written by subject specialists themselves, so subject departments are likely to feel greater "ownership" of such knowledge and be more ready to apply it in the classroom, because it has been put together by people in the same discipline as themselves.
