Ofsted publishes report on inclusion Thursday 13 July 2006 _Inclusion: Does it matter where pupils are taught?_ (http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/publications/index.cfm?fuseaction=pubs.summary&id=4235) found that effective provision was distributed equally in the mainstream and special schools visited, although there was more good and outstanding provision in resourced mainstream schools than elsewhere. Pupil Referral Units, by contrast, were the least successful of all the settings assessed. The report found that pupils with the most severe and complex needs can make excellent progress in all settings. High quality and experienced teaching, combined with commitment from school leaders, are the keys to success. Mainstream and special schools could benefit from sharing expertise in teaching pupils with learning difficulties and disabilities. Pupils in mainstream schools where support from teaching assistants was the main type of provision were less likely to make good academic progress than those who had access to specialist teaching in schools. Statements of special educational need were found to disadvantage pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. They were the least likely to receive effective support and the most likely to receive it too late. |
