Dear Grace,
firstly good luck. Secondly I wish you luck with LSA's and toiletting, unless you are exceptionally lucky they will refuse to toilet as it is not in their job description, I know I employed someone to do this and after a few months she refused!
Strategies for a run down department?
1. Ensure staff know the needs of new year 7's
2. Ensure staff know the needs of all other students with statements and Action Plus
3. Allocate LSA's or TA's to departments so that it is the HOD responsibility that the needs of students are met, but then ask them for their timetables and keep and LSA for yourself to plug gaps, has halved my time spent timetabling LSA's, I think the record was 17 timetables in one year.
4. Get your existing staff to write a guide to the school, and requirements and then a helpful hints page.
5. Then have a look at all your files and do a register, we no longer need to keep one but it clarifies things, then when the students are at the right stage let all staff have a copy through your intranet and ask them to ensure they know who is where.
6. Sort 5 files in case OFSTED come in, show support, progress and other relevant info. Cynical but effective
7. Then do your list of Annual Reviews, if they are late it is the LEA who are in trouble not you.
After all this you can reach the important bit, your kids.
Alternatively, you could meet and teach the kids and then worry about the rest.
Not uaually this cynical but welcome to OFSTED
Sue
P.S seriously if you want any help about the " English " way please let me know.

Hi All
I've asked for help before and would like to thank everyone who replied. I've just taken on acting SENco role after moving to England from Scotland. My dept has been allowed to run down and so I am trying to put systems in place to make it as efficient as possible. It is in a real mess just now - Annual reviews out of date etc
Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated e.g training, pro formas, ideas for differentiation, contact with parents etc.
I have 5 new TA's starting in Sept and I am trying to create a handbook to help them get started in SEN. Any ideas?
Can anyone advise if toileting a child is part of a TA's duties?
Grace
