We have a number of children like this child. Some of the things that have worked -with a very exp TA has been doing "social stories". Have you tried that? Also the use of a red card with his name on it so that he can remove himself to a safe haven. annie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mary Kelly" <mary.kelly4 at ntlworld.com> To: "'SUSAN WALSH'" <susan.walsh12 at btinternet.com>; <senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Sent: Monday, December 04, 2006 5:02 PM Subject: RE: [senco-forum] Asperger's I think the key is to identify what is causing this child the most anxiety and reduce those aspects - is it people crowding around him? Is it loud noises/music? Is it assemblies? Is it the feel of the carpet under him at carpet time? Find out what these things are and reduce them. Make sure teachers know that this is a child in a constant state of alert, feeling a great deal of anxiety. Just appreciating this may help them to be a little less wary and a little more understanding. I would also find out what signs he exhibits when his anxiety is growing - does he hand flap? Scribble? What? Find out what it is and then you may be able to head off an outburst by dealing with the anxiety. Does he have 1:1 support? Can you give him picture cards that he can use to try to explain his anxiety state to you? Just a few ideas in haste. Hope it helps, Mary -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of SUSAN WALSH Sent: 04 December 2006 15:37 To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] Asperger's I'm currently working with the EOTAS (Education Other than at School) Team. We are gradually integrating an 8 year old boy back into a mainstream school after he was permanently excluded from his previous school. Unfortunately he 'blew' big time on Friday. I'm looking for tried and tested ways of helping him deal with the anger before it gets out of control, any ideas? Also has anyone got any tips of how to set up a safe place for him to go in school to deal with his anger on his own. What sort of boundaries do you impose i.e. how and when to leave the classroom etc It's a tough time of the year with school routine often being disturbed due to Christmas stuff going on so it is a bit of an uphill struggle!! many thanks Sue BJKLtd at aol.com wrote: I know there has been a thread regading additonal time in the new IT exam. Sorry.....but does my memory serve me right that this can be up to 100% additional time for SEN pupils? Secondly, is 25% extra time the maximum at KS3 for English, Maths, Science......someone mentioned it could be up to 33% if an additional comprehension test proved it necessary, but not sure this applies to KS3 SAT's, possibly only GCSE onwards??? any advise Thanks.
