Well said Eddie. We have got to the situation where all sorts of allowances and modifications are made for those whose reading is below par and all this has done is maintain the status quo rather than put the problem right, in doing this the system has done them a great diservice. SEN has become a huge business that did not exist 30 years ago, too many vested interests at all levels of the system. If reading problems reduced to say 5% a lot of people would be out of work. I have always held that there is money to discover problems but not correct them. Just look at the resistance to conductive education for CP and cochlear implants for deafness to name but a few. The biggest offenders are usually found within the systems set up to 'support' the problem area, if an answer is found where would they end up? If I found the answer to even 30% of crime how long would I last and it would most likely be the higher levels of the justice / police system that would carry out the hit. Philip EP a cynic is an idealist who has been 'happy slapped' by reality. ----- Original Message ----- From: "eddiecarron" <eddiecarron at btconnect.com> To: <senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk> Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2006 4:44 PM Subject: [senco-forum] Literacy I unsubscribed from the forum a few months ago because the topics being discussed were of no interest to me. I subscribed again only to make this one posting. The topics discussed on the forum are principally concerned with the administration of illiteracy whereas I am concerned only with its remediation. Since few if any of the postings are connected with the resolution I unsubscribed and thought that that would be the end of it. However, I was contacted by a list member who took a similar view and also suggested that there should be a ring-fenced debating forum devoted exclusively to the initial teaching of reading and the resolution of reading illiteracy generally. The fact that just over 100,000 children leave school every year unnecessarily less than functionally literate should be a cause for greater concern than is apparent. Of course the topics discussed on the forum are important and of interest to people whose work is the administration of illiteracy but if enough people agree that there is a case for a dedicated debating forum for illiteracy and make their views known to BECTa I'm sure they would respond positively.
