Article: [senco-forum] Literacy

Hi Eddie
Good to hear from you again.
I understand why SENCOs are so concerned with the administration
- on the surface.
Deep down, I know all the SENCOs that I have worked with are
equally concerned with remediation, assessment, diagnosis, above
all "help". For that we all benefit from postings such as yours.
We need passion and experience.

I can see the benefit of a forum (possibly BECTA - sponsored) as
you suggest, just as there are others dedicated to arguably
smaller "interest areas" such as speech / language (Easyspeak),
ICT to support SEN (SENIT), EAL, PRU-talk, and many more. See
http://forum.ngfl.gov.uk/?14@738.RfqxawfCIbr.3@.3c3f1945
This would remove some of the volume of postings from
Senco-forum, the surfeit of which can lose members. I know
SENCOs who already subscribe to Easyspeak and SENIT and EAL etc,
so that they can keep in touch with the various aspects of SEN
covered more specifically on those forums.

Personally, I think I would subscribe to such a forum and find it
a useful addition, but would also remain here on Senco-Forum
(where I am alive, well, but mainly lurking as I am so busy!)

Rik

I unsubscribed from the forum a few months ago because the topics
being discussed were of no interest to me. I subscribed again
only to make this one posting. The topics discussed on the forum
are principally concerned with the administration of illiteracy
whereas I am concerned only with its remediation. Since few if
any of the postings are connected with the resolution I
unsubscribed and thought that that would be the end of it.
However, I was contacted by a list member who took a similar view
and also suggested that there should be a ring-fenced debating
forum devoted exclusively to the initial teaching of reading and
the resolution of reading
illiteracy generally. The fact that just over 100,000 children
leave
school every year unnecessarily less than functionally literate
should be a cause for greater concern than is apparent. Of course
the topics discussed on the forum are important and of interest
to people whose work is the administration of illiteracy but if
enough people agree that there is a case for a dedicated debating
forum for illiteracy and make their views known to BECTa I'm sure
they would respond positively.
