Personally, I would prefer to retain one forum from which I can select relevant topics knowing that the potential contributions come from a wide base of experience/viewpoints/opinions. If the forum is fragmented, it could lead to isolated debates without the potential to infiltrate into a wider audience. For example, Olanys mentioned... >The UK should be aiming for as high a percentage of literacy as other >countries... This could be used as a discussion around 'what are other countries doing that we're not' in order to explore possible ways of improving teaching/learning...a valable topic for all to have equal opportunity of reading and contributing towards. There are huge differences between different countries...language, attitudes to education, cultural and social differences both in and out of school. Rarely can these be taken out of context...taking one factor (eg age of full-time education) without knowing the details of the social context, can be very misleading. Literacy is not purely an educational issue. Home, the media and society play vital roles. The more voices able to contribute, the more holistic the debate. ...so, if we were able to make changes to improve the literacy (and numeracy) of youngsters, what suggestions/comments would people make?
