Article: [senco-forum] Separate forum for the teaching of reading/literacy

I never ever take offence at any comment from anyone in a debate. I regard a
debating forum as no place for the faint-hearted. Challenge and controversy

are the life blood of any debating forum. Any forum where these are absent
has lost the entire reason for its existence.

It is not an opinion, it is a fact that in the United Kingdom, 100,000
children leave school every year less than functionally literate and yet any
examination of the topics discuss on this forum which is theoretically
dedicated to the resolution of illiteracy, shows that this is just not a
matter of interest! One adult in five cannot read the correct dosage on a
child's medicine bottle - that is not an unavoidable situation - but those
who should best be able to contribute to its resolution appear not to be
interested in do so.

A great many people no longer subscribe to this forum for that very reason -
some have contacted me off-list and I have advised them to subscribe again,
at least long enough to support the cause of a literacy-focused debating
forum - It is surely self-evident from the topics discussed, that
illiteracy is just not a topical issue for existing contributors.

If those who are charged with the responsibility of resolving illiteracy
simply don't want to discuss the issue, then so be it. I do not think it
right however that in addition to their disinterest they should have the
power to make sure that a literacy-focused forum should not be created. What
possible harm could it do to a senco forum whose contributors are not
interest in literacy anyway.
