Article: [senco-forum] Catch up for High schools

Dear all,
through a member of my department I have been commanded to a meeting with our KS3 English co-ordinator and various others, re- the secondary Catch up programme from Caxton Press in Thetford. I feel I am being railroaded and before I commit staff time and money to a projected experiment, I need some information.
  1. The Secondary programme from Caxton Press has been triallled in 5 LEA's, I can only find Derbyshire.
  2. What does the training and the materials actually cost ? From the glossy brochure the training is £250, minimum £2,500 per school, so that is 10 people or am I reading it wrong ?
  3. Who has used this in their school and which students make the spectacular gains claimed, what is their comprehension gain ?
  4. So when they spend 2 x 15 minutes with an LSA twice a week, what happens to the very skilled teachers of reading who also do the whole holistic approach, as apparently this programme will work with kids at Key stages 1, 2 and lower 3 in a high school. What I want to know is there any high school who has used it for students between IQ's 50 and 70, who can read but never comprehend.
  5. If you are successfully using it for all your students can I please come and see the scheme in action and talk to you about the impact it has on all ranges of ability.
Thanks I know you will all help us if you can
                                        Sue
