I also was asked to go to our LA meeting on this catch-up programme. When I first read the blurb it appeared to be a dfes initiative but when I sat down and scrutinised it I realised it wasn't. These are my PERSONAL opinions: >From the presentation it appears that there is nothing revolutionary about the programme. It might work for some pupils who have already failed on a phonic scheme. The scheme is based on guided reading of books, analysis of strengths and errors and teaching for 6 mins per session based on this. (A simplified version of miscue analysis) It does not work on a structured basis and there is no automatic repetition and testing built into the scheme other than on a session by session basis. I don't think the scheme is multi-sensory. It is not suitable for very weak readers, probably with a reading age below about 8.5. There is no systematic teaching of spelling or decoding skills. The teaching relies on identifying individual words the pupil can't read, teaching them and if you wish including words with similar patterns. If you Google and find the website the secondary catch up leaflet you can download there is basically what you go through on Power point in the initial presentation. The scheme appears to me (and I may be wrong I often am!) that the scheme has been devised by English teachers not SEN specialists. Whilst I did come away from the session with one or two good ideas my school will not make the large financial investment that would be involved. Chris, Secondary senco |
