Article: [SENco-forum] Teaching programme

Sorry Brendan, my error, I knew it was 20% not sure why I said 10. My only excuse is it's been a long term, we have to work until Friday, and I am in the middle of P/SLASC (can't remember what it stands for now and don't care any more) statistics, and re-writing the non-existent SEN register. However, I can have a couple of weeks off to take the work home to do. We are in a very deprived area of the city with 70 odd % free school meals. In addition, 98% have English as a second language. So I suppose I am not surprised at the 50% SEN either. I think you have to work in an area like this to help you try to understand it. If I do not post again before next term. I do hope all of you on the forum have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year, or as they say around here, Happy Eid al addha.

Warnock was a notional 20% at any one time (i.e., some children will move in and
out of being identified with SEN at various times). This has been interpreted as
2% with statements (actually it is currently just under 3% nationally including
Brum) with 18% non-statemented. As about 1% will be attending special schools,
that means about 2% of children in mainstream will have statements, and about
17-18% at School Action of the CoP. In the Brum region, and similar areas with
pockets of particularly high deprivation, and highly mobile communities
(including notably many London Boroughs) it is not unusual for this unevenly
distributed national average to rise to at least 50% in schools in these areas
(such as Mike's school). I'm amazed that anyone can be amazed at this quite
obvious fact. Brendan King

Richard,

As you know we are just up the road from you, and we have identified 30% of the
school on CoP. (Code of Practice) and that is just via the LEA (local education
authority) Audit so does not take into account numeracy, social, emotional or
behavioural needs. When I finish identifying these children I would think we
will be on 50% so what happened to the Warnock 10%.

At my school we have 50% identified on the CoP, I don't have the staffing to
provide anywhere near 1:1 for more than a handful.

While I agree with the points on Media manipulation what is harder to deny
is the 40% with learning difficulties they found that even shocked the head.

Year 7 is way to late to intervene, even if the feeling is some help is
better than no help. Even though MRI is now showing that the brain is not
completely set at 12 it does require the use of different pathways or areas
as can be seen for late 2nd language learners. Our grandmothers always knew
that " you can't teach an old dog new tricks".

1:1 intervention for now for those 'trapped' in the system until different
teacher training can prepare those who really want to teach for all the
differing SEN in the classroom. Couple this with a re-think so that
'inclusion' does not only translate to 'everyone in the same classroom'
regardless of whether it addresses their teaching style or SEN needs and
then we will be moving forward.
