I hope you're not assuming, Eddie, that no-one is succeeding in doing anything for the potential prison population while they are still in school, or FE; though it sounds as if you are. I do emphasise with some of your comments about the proliferation of seemingly unsuccessful 'reading experts' in the education world, but some of us are working effectively with the semi-literate. And perhaps when the effects of the Rose Report work their way through we'll have a lot fewer to deal with in KS3 and beyond. Maggie Eddie Carron <eddiecarron at btconnect.com> wrote: I would suggest that the DfEES is advised to keep its sticky hands off this initiative since it appears to be enjoying considerable success without the benefit of professionally trained tutors. After all, the teaching profession swarms with profesionally trained tutors, specialists, advisors, consultants etc who have already failed and then abandoned this segment of society. I would not be inclined to hold up the dictates of the American prison service as a positive role model for any Eductional initiatives. Good on yer' Shannon Trust.
