** Sorry for adding the wrong subject line to my first attempt at this response. I'm not at my regular PC and this webmail client isn't behaving exactly as I'd expect it to ** > I'm very curious as to where this figure of 20% of children who can't learn to read with synthetic phonics has come from... This year as one of my New Year Resolutions I've decided to turn at least some of my attention to a completely new field. Indeed I'm now looking into the possibility of becoming a 'prison visitor'. So no doubt during the course of my visits I'll come across many many inmates who can barely read or write. Furthermore I'm sure I'll be asked if I can teach or help some of them develop these crucial skills. So my question is this: Given I've trained as a secondary school teacher (IT was my principal subject) and also completed a 'basic skills for adults' training course, what books or other resources that address the practical nitty-gritty of developing literacy do you suggest I put on my 'must buy or acquire' reading list?
