Dear all

Ruth telephoned yesterday - from her home! She sends her regards and thanks
to the forum.

She had been allowed out for the afternoon. This is good news. However,
because I didn't want to worry colleagues unduly, she had a very difficult
and painful time during the preceding week. To the extent that she could
hold a cigarette or toothbrush. The medical staff held a case conference at
which Ruth was present and as you can imagine participated fully! These
sessions involve staff from all the different disciplines and departments -
often they are called when there is a case, such as Ruth's, that they cannot
diagnose.

One of the outcomes has been to put Ruth on a course of steroids. and this
has begun to have positive (I hesitate to use the word dramatic) effects. So
that last week Ruth did feel a return of her strength, she can now smoke her
favourite ciggie etc. and staff have seen signs of all round improvement.
Above all else it has given Ruth hope and a feeling that something can and
is being done. Her voice, although not yet back to her normal booming self,
was full of confidence and genuine optimism. It was so uplifting!

Maybe Ruth (to use her own words) is beginning to turn the corner - it is
going to be long haul - we joked about getting a disability badge - so
please keep sending your cards and messages. Ruth really appreciates them,
they give her spirit a real boost. They do make a difference.
Best wishes.

Hi Folks

Just to let you know that the latest batch of post has been forwarded to
Ruth up at the main Royal Free site.

I had to go up to the Free for a meeting about a week ago so I was able to
take the latest post and pop in to see her. When I saw her she still didn't
know what was wrong, but sends her best wishes to everyone and hopes to be
out soon.

Regards,

Angie Reese
