Hi Kitty Sounds like someone who is a gifted Auditory Sequential Learner, who finds using pictures or images difficult. They are identifying more of these children now in the USA as the skill requirement becomes more graphics and multi-media orientated as opposed to the traditional word and text based skill requirements of recent times. They could become the new dyslexics, unable to read graphics rather than words. If that is the case then it is a matter of trying to developing coping strategies to may be remember whole images rather than the parts that make up the image, and to create an association that means something for her so that she can relate to that image. You may find the article regarding teaching Visual-Spatial learners to read and spell useful, but substituting images for words, and lines for letters etc. http://www.apduk.org/learningstyles/vslteachread.htm http://www.apduk.org/learningstyles/vsl_lks_spell.htm http://www.apduk.org/learningstyles/vsl_lks_reading.htm just a thought hope it helps best wishes Graeme dolfrog dolfrog at apduk.org http://www.apduk.org dolfrog at dolfrog.com http://www.dolfrog.com http://www.ldlinks.org.uk -----Original Message----- From: senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk [mailto:senco-forum-bounces at lists.becta.org.uk] On Behalf Of Kitty McKenzie Sent: Friday, July 07, 2006 8:30 PM To: senco-forum at lists.becta.org.uk Subject: [senco-forum] can't 'read' info in diagram form Hope someone has experience of this. The very bright daughter of a friend of mine (5 As at A level, studying to be a doctor) has just failed an anatomy exam. She said she just cannot understand diagrams and they mean nothing to her. She said she spent most of the time in the exam turning the paper around to see if it would make more sense. She has a similar experience when she did physics at school. She has to pass a resit in August. Any advice will be passed on and gratefully received. Thanks Kitty |
