I also find diagrams impossible to read. I have to get someone to translate them into words, then I can understand and learn them. This has its limitations. Perhaps your friend's daughter can get access to 3-D models, preferably solid but otherwise computer- based. I find pictures, especially photographs or moving images, easier than diagrams. I am also "face-blind." When I meet new people, I try hard to memorise their features but when I try to recall them, only words come back.
