"you'll only know what it's really like if (eg) you've ever found yourself feeling totally powerless at the mercy of a powerful regulatory body. Feeling paranoid, bullied, scared about your whole future going down the pan, getting in a panic because nobody is listening and not a single advocate available to support your corner? Ah - you may have touched on what it's feels like (every day without hope of release) to have a mind which is differently-abled." Very true, this is what it's like for a child worth APD every day too, unable to undrstand what's going on around them, unable to trust what they "hear" as what's being said becuase they may have missed out a word like "not" and the opposite is true, e.g. the teacher may say "Don't put your workings out your paper, use a separate sheet... " and they may only hear "Put your workings out your paper". Sometimes they may understand it all then it's worse the next time they get it wrong because the teacher thinks they're putting it on... they get accused of "selective hearing" or laziness. Constantly "getting it wrong" can be terrifying if you have no idea why...as can being ostracised by your peers for not "getting" things, when you think you do. Being made to feel you are stupid every day because you can't even follow the simplest instructions or understand what you have to do...even though you are fully capable of doing it well after you understand what is expected - but many children with APD never get that far and never experience success.
