Article: [senco-forum] tranfers

I run a special induction programme for those new intake students with
Statements or at School Action Plus. This is in addition to the
school's induction day. Students attend for four Tuesday afternoons and
we organise a variety of activities for them designed to get them used
to their new school. I had two students attend during the first year -
four years ago now - and so far this year I am expecting thirty! The
Primary Schools and the students love it!

Hi Elizabeth
We arrange extra visits for Year 6 pupils and we never put them in
lessons. We have occasionally put pupils in with Year 7s for a day
earlier in the year at parents' request when they are in the choosing
school business but that is arranged by the Head of Year 7.
What we have done is to set up classess for Year 6 pupils in science
run by our science AST. We also do a transition project involving a
different department every year.
I think you are right - pupils at the end of Year 7 have moved on
too far and built up too much additional knowledge for a Year 6 pupil
to 'get a feel' of lessons.

We have had several primary schools approach us to organised special
visits for pupils who are coming to us in Year 7. We are quite happy to
arrange this but many are now asking for the visiting Year 6 pupil with
SEN to be able to sit in on taught classes with Year 7 pupils. We are
not too happy about this as we feel it does not give a true experience
of the Year 7 experience and the Year 7's have been in secondary for
school for almost a year and are therefore more mature. Do other
schools receive similar requests and how do they feel about this.
