Alphasmart Neos with Cowriter or if you can afford it, Alphasmart Danas
with the soundcard and Write Outloud will give the SEN children a big
boost in writing more independently - they can be used by children who
lack confidence in writing due to spelling problems and revolutionise
the attitude and attainment of dyspraxic kids, once the pressure of
making text is removed and they can concentrate on content
Cheers

Subject: [senco-forum] ICT and SEN

Dear All
I am SENCO in a small primary school. Our ICT coordinator has asked me
to think about how we can better use ICT to support children with SEN -
and so I am trawling for ideas! At the moment, we use ICT very little
to support SEN children directly. We have numbershark and wordshark and
acceleread / accelewrite programmes. Problem with these is finding TA
time to supervise their use, and also for class teachers to allocate
regular slots for the children who might benefit. Each class has
interactive whiteboard (used to varying effect across the school) and
otherwise class computers largely used for teacher admin. We have ICT
suite where ICT skills are taught and also where children in KS2 work on
the ILS programme (not something I like personally).

This is really blue sky thinking. Any suggestions for : courses which
may increase my knowledge / skills on using ICT to support SEN; software
which you view as invaluable; ways of working for class teachers to make
better use of computers etc etc would be gratefully received.

Budget probably pretty negligible.

What do you all do?

In grateful anticipation

Anusia
