If anyone's thinking of buying a new PC for home or school use then an Apple might now be a good choice. Why? Because the latest Apple Macintosh computers not only use the same processor as other PCs, they can also run Windows XP and therefore any software written to run under Windows which means you now get the best of both worlds. How? Well Apple has just released a piece of software called 'Boot Camp' that configures their hardware to let Windows be installed natively -- not as an emulation. This means Windows can now run on a Macintosh at full speed. At present you still have to boot either into Windows or into Apple OS-X, but both operating systems can access the same data on your disks. Rumour has it that Apple is hoping new users will try both operating systems and decide OS-X is better. But whatever the reason this means Apple lovers are no longer left out in the cold when they need to be running a PC at home that's compatible with the machines they use at work. The other good thing from a school's point of view is students can get to learn and can compare at least two different operating systems -- a requirement of the ICT National Curriculum. 'Boot camp' is free, as is OX-X which comes supplied with Apples, but you'll have to buy a full version of Windows XP (not an upgrade) if you want to run Windows software. Even so if I was in the market for a new PC I'd probably now buy an Apple. David Bowles > Hi, Rik, Like you, I am a happy Apple owner. I've just had a > message about Apple summer camp - in Birmingham, Manchester and > London. It is free, computers are supplied for a morning learning > about podcasts, webpages etc. Children up to 12 must be accompanied > by a parent. Children leave with a CD of their work, T-shirt etc. > http://www.apple.com/uk/retail/summercamp/ > Do you think I should put it on the forum or is it too commercial? Jill David Bowles |
