Article: [senco-forum] Assessment and intervention advice

Hi I'm not sure whether to count myself lucky or to panic!
I'm a fairly new SENCO (still trying hard to get to grips
with it all) of a medium sized Junior school and have just
been told that I 'have the honour' of taking on the title of
assessment co-ordinator next year. Initially it sounded
great because we don't currently have one and it's in a bit
of a shambles, but where do I start?
I will be in charge of all assessment and intervention as
well as SEN. In order to do this I will be out of class
full time (This is the lucky part). The problem is that
currently we don't run many interventions apart from the
usual ALS, FLS, boosters and Springboard. As far as
assessment goes, we test reading and spelling ages and all
pupils do the optional QCA tests.
Any suggestions as to where I might start with assessment
and any suggestions of interventions that work really well
in other schools? Writing is a particular issue in our
school, we have a relatively high proportion of SEN and EAL.

Thanks in advance
Emma
