Hi Sharon In English, the spelling mark is part of the writing assessment in section 2 of each paper. Each essay is marked out of 27. 9 of those marks are for 'spelling, punctuation and grammar'. It's about using sentences for effect and key techniques as well as accurate spelling. The reading sections of each paper are not assessed for spelling at all. It is possible to be a lousy speller and still get good marks for writing. If a student dictates, they have to dictate the punctuation and the spelling is not taken into account, I think. Sorry - don't teach lit.
