[senco-forum] Meaning of Reading Ages

According to a friendly EP, reading ages plot on a curve (as do percentiles)
so cannot be used over time as comparisons.  Standard scores can.  They are
neatly illustrated on the British picture vocab Test form and I use that
digram to explain scores to parents - as average, above average and below
average according to the distribution curve.  Sounds complex but so far they
have all got it.

You could show and explain to her the tests you use to arrive at reading
ages, and then perhaps refer her to some children's books where the
"readability" matches the reading age for a sample of children? You
could also show her to derive percentiles and explain what they mean?

I have always used reading ages on my Learning support register but was
taken aback today when a Head of Department pointed out that as she has
no children of her own, and has never taught in primary schools she
found it difficult to guage what I meant by a reading age of x years.
What would the student be able to do? At this busy time of year I need
to save myself another job. Is there a guide sheet in print anywhere
that I could pass on.It's actualy quite a difficult concept as every
student is an individual. Any ideas?
