Or - and I speak for Pedants Anonymous here - they are actually both the
MEDIAN. The "average" you will find quoted in reports extends from 17th
to 84th percentile (SS85 - 115) inclusive, as shown on the BPVS diagram
Philippa referred to.

100 is the average in standard score terms and 50 is the average in
percentile terms.  This is clear in the diagram on the British Picture
Vocabulary form, where the two scales are illustrated along parallel
lines
and against the Bell curve.  I use this diagram to explain the scores to
parents and they always understand it.

Remember 100 is the average in percentile terms not 50 --  brendan
