Why do we have to be bound by the NC? It is a list of guidelines achievable by average children. A learning difficulty means that information has to be input in a different way for the child to learn and you are clearly putting in a lot of extra effort on this front. Is the child making progress? Are they making as much progress as they want? Then that is all that matters. Walk them through the lower NC levels as quickly as their ability will allow and in a format that they can access. Ask the child if they want to do Math in Y6 or in another class. They may be happier working with a group where they can have some success. Another child may be unhappy changing classes and the child's wishes must be taken into account. I have a similar English as an Additional Language problem. EAL visiting staff said leave the student in a Y5 class even though they have no English. While all for total immersion during all other subjects I do not think it is appropriate in 'English' -learning about Speech Marks -when a lower class working on simple sentences might be more appropriate. It is only a small school so changing sets is not possible and this is the only EAL student. Sticking to policy is inclusion gone mad. Sharon |
