Article: [senco-forum] teacher for visually impaired interview urgent

A few random issues that have come up over the years at my (secondary)
school which has resourced provision for visual impairment.
How do you manage exam access arrangements for students with 100% extra
time? Two lots of four hour exams?
What about students who will get A-C GCSEs but who might need to drop some
because they just cannot keep up with all the reading which takes them so
much longer than anyone else?
Does the school appreciate the need to keep lights on all day throughout the
school especially on stairs and in corridors even in Summer, for students
who need this. You need to persuade and remind the bursar and other students
and staff who turn the lights off.
You need to think very carefully about how you use interactive whiteboards,
videos etc and be prepared to have twice the amount of equipment.
How do you get staff to plan ahead and make sure all the work is adapted in
time?
What do you do about students with visual impairments who socialise with
each other but find it very difficult with the rest of their peer groups?
What do you do when the peer group say that the student with visual
impairment is unfriendly because they ignore them in the corridors ?
You need to think through issues regarding students with visual impairments
and other needs such as learning difficulties. A student with "just" a
visual impairment may have their work adapted by a specialist assistant ot
teacher and then be left in the class with no extra support. But who
supports and how when there are other difficulties as well?
Hope your friend does well in the interview. There is certainly a shortage
of teachers trained in visual impairment.
