Article: [senco-forum] Literacy Support

Hi Sue

The big problem you have lies in one sentence of your post
______________________________________________________
I am not allowed to withdraw pupils for anything other than assessment.

________________________________________________________-

Get that corrected and you may begin to win the support of those who need
the support and their parents. It shows that you mean to help in school
time, and not in their own time much needed for refreshment, relating to
peers and de-stressing.
Having a literacy problems causes stress, and the scheme your school seems
to be wanting to run just adds more stress, and less time to relax and
reduce the stress levels. It is not about inducements and bribes, it is
about understanding and motivation, and not adding to an already stressful
situation. So your policy makers need to understand the nature of the issues
and work around the children in need and not to their own priorities.

Best wishes

Graeme

Subject: [senco-forum] Literacy Support

Hi,

I am new to this, so please be patient with me.

My name is Sue and I am a senior school SENCO and E2L manager in the south
west.

I would appreciate your views on a school situation I have as I am trying to

work out the best approach to my head teacher.

I am not allowed to withdraw pupils for anything other than assessment.

Additional literacy support takes place either before or after school but
some pupils (generally the most needy) do not attend, despite our best
efforts, involving parent, bribing through rewards etc. This means that we
have pupils with very low reading and spelling levels not accessing any
specific support for these skills!!! I have now been told to provide
literacy support programmes for these children during their 35 minute lunch
break. These are children who have concentration problems, no automaticity
of literacy skill and often have some social problems as well. They would be

working for 3 1/2 hour without a proper break. Is this acceptable??!!

Your views please, plus any suggestions.

Sue
