Tomorrow I start teaching (for reintegration service) a girl on a fixed-term exclusion from her special (Social Emotional Behavoural Difficulties) school - (state boarding). The list of her offences includes the strategies that were used to calm her. THey were not all used at once! THey are, in no particular order: Banned from going off-site; Being given a clear set of choices, together with consequences; having reward points removed; being spoken to in a calm manner; early bedtime; having another member of staff brought in to defuse situation; having actions reported directly to SMT; having a distraction technique used; having the situation calmed by the use of appropriate humour; being reassured; use of studio 3 (Computer audio package - try Google); being reported to police. Obviously they are not infallible, otherwise I wouldn't be seeing her - but I was glad to have a list of possible strategies to think about and grateful to the school for including them. Hope this helps!
